Masked far-left groups smashed their way into the 19th-century Limoges town hall, set it ablaze, and brought down the clock tower and belfry. The mayor called it a premeditated arson attack and said people inside feared for their lives. Nationwide, nearly 1,800 people were arrested, more than 500 police, gendarmes, and firefighters were injured, shops were looted, and public buildings were targeted.
