द्रोण के मारे जाने के बाद अश्वत्थामा ने कर्ण को सेनापति बनाए जाने का प्रस्ताव रखा जिस पर दुर्योधन ने अपनी सहमति जताई। अर्जुन ने संशप्तकों के कई सहस्त्र योद्धाओं का वध कर दिया और कौरव सेना में भगदड़ मच गई। रणभूमि के इस युद्ध में सोलहवें दिन पाण्डव सेना प्रसन्नचित्त होकर अपने शिविर में लौटी।
