Welcome to episode 13.
Language is something we all use on a daily basis, however the language we use can effect someone injury and treatment in a positive or negative way. It is an area that is often overlooked, however we see the impact of using the right language at the right time.
For example image the thoughts that may go through someones head when the terms like 'your spine is crumbling' or 'your knees are shot' when explaining Osteoarthritis. This is called nocebic language and can install fear into someone and have a negative impact of treatment. Then think about the effect of, 'there are some age related changes, its ok'
We try and be selective with the language we use in clinic and Nick, Charlie and Dave discuss the effects and some ways help and think about the language that is used within health care.
