Katsuhiro Otomo's "Akira" stood tall as a groundbreaking animated film, even as there rest of the industry struggled. In the USA in particular, Disney dropped the ball several times throughout the decade, and the rest of the landscape was made up of Saturday morning cartoon film spinoffs made to sell toys.
