On August 21, 1831, Nat Turner launched the deadliest slave rebellion in United States history in Southampton County, Virginia. This pivotal and tragic uprising resulted in the deaths of approximately 55 white individuals and triggered a brutal retaliatory response where militias and mobs killed roughly 120 enslaved and free Black people. The rebellion's suppression led to immediate and severe legislative changes across the American South, including laws that strictly prohibited the education of enslaved people and restricted the right of assembly for free Blacks. Beyond this somber anniversary, the date marks the 1911 theft of the Mona Lisa from the Louvre, a heist that remarkably went unnoticed for two days. The episode also highlights the birthdays of three world-changing figures: Olympic sprinting legend Usain Bolt, who holds the world records for the 100-meter and 200-meter sprints; Sergey Brin, the computer scientist whose co-founding of Google and development of the PageRank algorithm revolutionized how we access information; and Kim Cattrall, the celebrated actress known for her iconic role in Sex and the City.
