On August 17, 2017, the scientific community witnessed a milestone in astrophysics when the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) detected ripples in space-time caused by the collision of two neutron stars. This event, occurring in the galaxy NGC 4993, was unique as it was also observed through light and gamma rays, ushering in the era of multi-messenger astronomy. The resulting explosion, known as a kilonova, provided a spectacular display approximately 130 million light-years from Earth. This episode also explores the lives of three monumental figures born on this day: Marcus Garvey, the architect of Pan-Africanism; Mae West, the provocative star of stage and screen; and Robert De Niro, the acclaimed method actor whose roles have defined modern cinema. Together, these stories reflect a day of massive structural shifts, both in the heavens and in human culture.
