Anxiety occurs when your thoughts, worries, and fears are literally everywhere but where you are right now. Your thoughts are geared towards unrealized dangers instead of savoring each moment, and make it joyful and peaceful.
Staying present is hard. Most of the time, our minds are reflecting on the past, or focusing on those unrealized dangers or threats of the future. But as HoloCaust survivor Carrie Ten Boom said, “Worrying does not empty tomorrow of its struggles, it empties today of its strength.” Don’t empty the beauty of today for the unrealized danger of tomorrow. or next year, or a decade from now.
- Remind yourself there’s no way to know for sure what’s going to happen
- Avoid getting paralyzed by unrealized danger
- Find something in the moment to seize and savor
