The adventuring group has been sent through the mists into the cursed lands of Barovia. They are greeted by Ismark in the town tavern and leads the group to his sister who he is concerned for her safety. She has been visited on more than one occasion by the evil leader and reigning terror of the lands in Barovia. He has taken a special interest in Ireena (Ismark's sister). The group agrees to help Ismark and Ireena escape from the village of Barovia either to the village of Vallaki where she can hopefully escape the grasp of Strahd or further to the village of Krezk where there is a Abby that may protect her. 

On their way out Ireena Asks that she can have the party receive a blessing from the local priest where the group is confronted by evil and sorrow and as the priests son has returned from the dead and torments his father.
