The signal from the living construct aboard the Protostar seems fully capable of destroying Starfleet. Dal, Gwyn, and the others have to make a sacrifice to save the day - but there's no guarantee Starfleet will welcome them afterward when "Supernova" Part 2 goes into the Mission Log.
