In this episode of Anatomy of a Song, I revisit NewJeans by stripping back the vocals of "Hurt," "Cool With You," "Supernatural," "Get Up" and "Super Shy."

One thing became immediately obvious: some member have such distinct vocal colour. Whether it's tone, phrasing or delivery, it can beremarkably easy to guess who's singing, giving the group a strong sense of individuality that has become one of their defining qualities.

What surprised me, however, was how restrained the harmonies are. While the simplicity suits NewJeans' minimalist sound, I couldn't help but wonder how much more impactful some of these songs could have been with richer vocal layering and more adventurous arrangements.
