By stripping the production back and focusing on the vocals, I compare tone, control, blend and overall delivery — and rank each performance using my own scale: civilian, athlete, Olympian or world class.

Smaller groups often get overlooked, but once you isolate the voices, the differences become a lot clearer. Who’s carrying their songs vocally, and who’s relying more on the production?
