At the age of 20, a 4-ton hoist fell on Dr. Perry’s leg and only a motorcycle racing boot that he was wearing kept him from losing his leg. It took him four surgeries and six years to regain his ability to walk and run. During that time, he lost his appetite for medical school, where he had been headed, and instead sought out the field of rehabilitation at the Los Angeles College of Chiropractic (now called Southern California University of Health Sciences in Whittier, CA). A track coach of Wilt Chamberlain’s WonderWomen Track Club walked into his office one day and asked him to help the female athletes, ages 9-27. That was the beginning of his illustrious and sometimes controversial career in helping many of the world’s top athletes win Olympic medals. Decades later, most chiropractors around the world know the name of Dr. LeRoy Perry and many of them will say he’s the reason they become a chiropractor. In 2018, he was called, “The Father of Sports Chiropractic” by Dr. Peter Martin, the President of the Palmer College of Chiropractic.
