Kevin Davis interviews his long-time friend Marty Hopes. They talk business, aircraft, airplane detailing, family, raising sons and daughters, PTSD, and Irreverent Warriors, and organization that helps connect veterans with other veterans through hikes, walks, and rucks.

Marty Hopes is 55 years old and a Montana native. He is originally from Hardin and is now a small business owner living in Bozeman with his wife and grown children nearby.

Marty is passionate about Veteran suicide prevention. During a particularly hard time, he was introduced to a non-profit organization called Irreverent Warriors. When describing his first IW signature hike event, he says, “I felt like I was finally home.” Marty started attending as many hikes as time and money would allow, traveling across the US to connect with fellow Veterans in a shared memorable experience. This is how Marty met his 4th, forever wife Marissa, who is a Veteran of both the Air Force and Army. With a dual passion for helping Veterans, they wanted to bring the IW community and Silkies Hike to Montana Veterans. In June 2022, Marty and Marissa took on the responsibility of coordinating the first ever Montana Irreverent Warriors and hosted the inaugural Bozeman Silkies Hike. Starting from scratch, Marty utilized his professional contacts and upstanding reputation as a business owner to garner community support and sponsorships for the hike. Marty and Marissa are currently planning and organizing the 2023 July 15 hike which has already exceeded their expectations as out-of-state hikers continue to confirm their attendance, lunch for the entire hike group has been fully sponsored by Spectators Bar and Grill, media coverage is effortlessly being secured, and support for the hike continues to expand and grow. They also set a firm agreement to make this their final hike as coordinators and will step down to serve in support roles for their successor(s).

There will be new challenges to take on once Marty is no longer running a huge hike event. Marty and Marissa are also the founders of the IGY6 Rucking Crew; an official GORUCK club but their club is open to Veterans and military members only. They plan to grow their ruck club as a community branch for the IW group and aspire to compete in both distance and obstacle course events.

Most friends and acquaintances of Marty have no clue he is a day over 45. His wife didn’t for quite some time as she is 38! This is indicative of his spirit, energy, and annoyingly ability to reverse age. Marissa says her husband’s health and outward appearance should be enviable to all men and also inspirational as he’s overcome major injuries from his martial arts days, had to restart from divorce devastation 3 times throughout life, and endured his fair share of life saying “fuck you” with a blindsided sucker punch. With his charming smile, fully tattooed arms, and chuck taylors on, you’d never know the depth behind his charisma. He doesn’t quit striving to grow and be a better human, ever, nor will he. Marty doesn’t know what giving up means, literally. This is why people think he and his son are brothers. He lacks the jaded bitterness and achievement acquiesces often attributed to peers of his age.

If you refuse to quit, refuse to settle, and decide not to accept mediocracy despite its comfort, then you may understand why Marty Hopes is the remarkable accomplished man he is today.
