What’s the point of sensor cleaning?

Unlike humans that just peer around dirt that gets tracked on their windshield, sensors rely on being able to fully use all portions of the sensor.

In my fascinating conversation with Tom Jellicoe, Cambridge Ph.D. in physics and consultant for Sensors & Devices at TTP plc, he said that sensor cleaning is essential to ensuring the critical safety system is fully operational.
