Dr. Cheryl MacDonald has published some of the top research about gender, masculinity, and homophobia in hockey and discusses some of her findings. We discuss hegemonic masculinity, sexism, why hockey players may be less inclined to come out, and why language use is important. Erik Denison joins the episode to talk about some of his research, which focuses on homophobic language in sports around the world. He talks about why language can be critical to the safety of children and how sport governing bodies leave children at risk.
