Welcome to the very first episode of HUMBOLDTCAST. Today I speak with ordained Zen Buddhist Priest Alex Kantner of the Arcata Zen Group, which practice the Soto Zen tradition of Buddhism. We touch on many topics such as The differences and similarities of different forms of Buddhism, The Dalai Lama, Synchronicities, Meditation during Covid and much much more...

This particular Interview was a project from my Religion in America course here at Humboldt State University titled: Oral History: Religion and Humboldt, in the Time of COVID. Big Thanks to Arcata Zen Group and  Sir Alex Kantner below is a little information and some links about there group if you would like to explore this topic further:  https://www.arcatazengroup.org/ We are a small, lay-oriented sangha practicing on the North Coast of California in Humboldt County. We practice within the Soto Zen tradition of Eihei Dogen Zenji (1200-1253) and Shunryu Suzuki Roshi (1904-1971), founder of the San Francisco Zen Center. Our temple, Rin Shin-ji (Forest Heart Temple), was founded by Seisho Maylie Scott in 1999. Maylie came to Arcata from Berkeley Zen Center, where she trained for many years and received Dharma transmission from Sojun Mel Weitsman, an eminent disciple of Suzuki Roshi. After Maylie's death in 2001, Hozan Alan Senauke (a dharma brother of Maylie) and Enji Angie Boissevain (a disciple of Kobun Chino Roshi) served for many years as visiting teachers and advisors. Zenki Mary Mocine and Tokuden Mark Lancaster have also been important teachers for our sangha. In 2014 Fugan Eugene Bush became our Head Teacher. He is a dharma heir of Sobun Katherine Thanas in the Suzuki Roshi lineage.  HUMBOLDTCAST is a new project to spark public conversation on important topics in the hopes of promoting and fostering the relationship between Students, Faculty, Staff of Humboldt State University and the General Public in Humboldt County.
