Lumpen ConnexionsSeijo and her soul, Karen Wener2023 / Co-production Lumpen Station and Karen WernerSeijo and her soul is an ancient ghost story, likely of Chinese origin. I encountered the story while studying Zen Buddhism. The story of Seijo and her soul is included in Zen koan training intended to deepen practice. Seijo and her Soul is a rare koan with a female protagonist. The story is of a woman who has to choose between her love and her home, chooses love and then separates from her soul. At the end of the story, Seijo encounters her soul again and we are asked: which is the real Seijo? This telling for Lumpen Station is woven into the FM radio spectrum, interference and distances between. Karen Werner is an artist and sociologist creating radio performances and stories for broadcast and narrowcast. She makes conceptual, experimental radio stations of various scales and forms including SkottegatenFM, Radio Multe 93.8FM and an unnamed shadow/ jamming station and is a member of the international feminist group, Shortwave Collective. Karen lives in Bergen, Norway, where she is an Artistic Research Fellow at at the Faculty of Art, Music and Design, University of Bergen.
