Fermentation workshop by Benoit Casot, Byungseo Yoo, Colin St. MaryLumpen connexions, october 2022, co-production Presentation :Fermentation workshop radio is a participatory audio program produced with Lumpenstation (https://lumpenstation.art/) by the Fermentation workshop collective, which is researching and practicing the commoning of art-institution through the concept and methodology of fermentation based on HEAD-GENEVE with the support of Utopiana (https://www.utopiana.art) This participatory program, which ferments the vegetables through the food rescue process and shares it with the participants, consists of storytelling of the food rescue and fermentation in an allegorical format, interviews with people who are engaged, and an empirical and practical audio recipe. This event shares fermented foods with the participants, and the participants share their own experiences and impressions related to fermentation while they are having collective dining.Detailed description:Fermentation workshop (ongoing project since 2021) is action research that takes place on-site at the art institution, HEAD-Geneve in particular. The basic concept of the research was initiated from the idea of reappropriation of the resources that are given to art students. In most cases, art students produce physical and digital objects by using these resources. The objects which shall be called artworks flow into the (pre)art market. However, while only a few artworks are survived as it supposed to, the others are forgotten and left behind. And most cases these objects are thrown as garbage after the evaluation process. This action research investigates this process to shift it from the abusive capitalism-dead-end flow to common the resources of the art institution by methodologies of the fermentation.A spontaneous, non-explicit group of students organize visits to a supermarket near the HEAD-Geneve every Tuesday for food rescue. On Wednesday, La Soupe! Collective uses vegetables from the food rescue to cook an accessible lunch for students which cost 5 CHF. Leftover vegetables are subjected to Lacto-fermentation through the open workshops presented by the Fermentation Workshop. The fermentation products produced through this workshop are distributed through the underground bio market temporarily installed at the institution (HEAD-Geneve) to raise emergency relief funds for students in financial difficulties. The Fermentation workshop radio will be held at art Space Utopiana in Geneva deals with the collective run by students enrolled in HEAD-Geneve. In this program, which appropriates the grammar of a traditional radio program to try to read and speak critically about the current food and culture, the participants are invited in advance to share the food prepared by the collective and share their experiences and stories. The public conversations with the participants will be recorded and edited, merged with the existing recordings (storytelling on the food rescue, interviews with people who are engaged, original scores, etc.), and will be finally released through Lumpenstation in November 2022.Fermentation Workshop aims to create a platform to transmit the emotions, feelings, and knowledge by sharing the methodology and the concept of vegetable fermentation especially the methodologies that are oriented in the Asian region to create kinship and to remind ourselves as a being of biophilia and to create symbiogenesis, sympoiesis way of living and thinking and doing in the current systemic crisis.
