Joy Lapps-Lewis
Joy Lapps is a Canadian musician, composer, academic and arts educator of Antiguan and Barbudan descent. She was awarded a Masters in Music Composition at York University, and her proficiency with the tenor pan is known internationally. Joy’s diverse performance range has led to engaging audience experiences and deserving recognition from professional pannists and a dedicated fanbase.
She leads The Joy Lapps Project, an ensemble exploring Afro and Latin-Caribbean Jazz, with a hint of R&B and soul. She has performed at festivals including Afrofest, Toronto's TD Jazz Festival, Antigua’s Moods of Pan Festival and Miami’s GroundUpFestival. Lapps-Lewis has educated hundreds of people through her masterclasses and workshops at schools, libraries and community spaces.
In 2019 Joy presented her multi-disciplinary project titled From Skin 2 Steel and Beyond at the Evergreen Brick Works, a historical landmark in Toronto. The project engages community through workshops, creation, live performance and community symposia. Each element explores aspects of how natural environments have impacted the development of the steelpan and how the instrument, its creators and the descendants of its creators have responded by impacting our cultural and social environments.
Joy is currently putting the finishing touches on her forthcoming 2021 release and is in the development phase of multi-disciplinary performance celebrating the contributions of women to the steelpan community.
