<p>The polygraph ("lie detector") has had a controversial history since it was invented in California by John Larson, a police officer with a Ph.D. in &nbsp;physiology. Periodically used in criminal investigations, employee screenings, and identifying who might be&nbsp;leaking classified information, we discuss some of the research behind it as well as some risks associated with its use.</p>
