Today we reach into the vault and pull out a popular podcast from 2020 about giving and receiving feedback. As we all know, we typically don't want to hear it. However it is important to not only receive feedback, but to also know how to given feedback in a professional and loving manner.
Feedback needs to be immediate for it to be effective
- Don't let time pass before you address the situation
- Feedback should be from the heart and given with the intention of growth, not of selfishness.
Consider the intent of the person giving the feedback
- Are they invested in your personal growth or is there a hidden agenda
- Feedback is an opinion
- When giving feedback, make sure you know where you stand in the relationship. Is trust already established?
How should we process feedback?
- Give it 24 hours to let it process
- Use wisdom to discern especially if this is the first time you have heard it
- You typically know deep down if the feedback is spot on. What are you going to do about it?
- Your not perfect so don't let the feedback bring you down, grow from it.
- If you truly learned something from the feedback, make the effort to thank the one giving it.
