On February 27, 2003, Fred Rogers — the beloved television host and educator whose gentle voice, trademark cardigan sweaters, and unwavering compassion made Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood a cherished part of childhood for generations of Americans — died of stomach cancer at his home in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, at the age of 74. At the time of his death, Rogers had spent more than three decades helping children understand difficult emotions, confront their fears, and recognize their own worth, transforming a simple public television program into one of the most enduring and influential institutions in American children’s television.
