Both my state and local federations celebrate 50 years this year. With all the workers striving for a contract and figuring out how to structure the union they fought so hard to win, I profile my local and all it has built in that half century. How is it structured? How does it function? What does it do? And why is the contract so important?

My own local and state union, NY State United Teachers, celebrating 50 years and counting this year. Approval of unions in the U.S. at a 50-year high.

It all comes together in the workers of America realizing their self worth-- and working to claim their share of an ever-elusive pie.
