In Water Safety and Survival courses, students are taught to NEVER attempt a direct rescue of a conscious drowning person without proper training. Why so? Because drowning persons--in a panic--are likely to claw at rescuers and climb to the surface at all costs. Reports abound of drowning persons and their would-be rescuers being lost together for this reason. In this installation of our series on Marcus Aurelius, Coach Blake discusses Aurelius's advice that we should not expect bad people to exempt us from their destructive ways. Whether in our own bodies, our sense of higher purpose, our families, or our business, we need to be aware of those destructive forces that threaten our safety and security, as well as the safety and security of those we lead. A wise leader must know the difference between someone who needs patience and coaching, as opposed to someone who finds meaning and takes satisfaction in sowing discord and chaos.
