Back in the Middle Ages, to be successful was to be holy — with holiness defined as the full flourishing of your person brought to completion. Today, we have redefined success. We have reduced it. If you're good at one thing (pleasure, power, possession) you're considered to be "living the dream". That you've arrived. But it's not true to our nature. Jesus has a different list of goals — they're called the Beatitudes.
