033 Show Info – A New Shop

Show Topic: Kyle and Dan talk about shop ideas, tools, and what you might want in a new shop.

Overview: As some of you are already aware, I (Kyle) have bought a new house and with that, I have a new shop space!  This opens up a huge opportunity for layout and design of the new space.  Dan and I were talking on the phone about all this, after about 20 minutes, I said “we need to record this!”.  Hope you all enjoy this next podcast on the Knife Perspective!

Things to consider when setting up a shop

What is the shop plans

• Kyle’s shop is going to be very multi purpose / Dan’s built for max working efficiency for knives
• Use grid paper to arrange everything to scale
  • Try to group in triangles about 3 steps apart 
  • Saw, glue up, drill press, steel storage, drill press, grinder.  Ect 
  • Lay out with boxes and tape 

Electrical

• How much power do you need in the shop?
• How to organize outlets
• 220 Outlets  
  • Grinders 
  • Heat Treat Oven 
  • Eventually a welder
• 110 Outlets for other plug in items
  • 20 amp circuits
  • Table saw (Might convert to 220V at some point)

Heating / Cooling

• Heating more important for Kyle / Cooling more important for Dan
• Gas Heat or Electric Heat
• Air conditioning ideas
• Possible heat box so glues ups will cure in the winter 

Workbench type / Material

• Jonathan Porter (Doghouse Forge) Has expanded metal horizontal surfaces around his grinders
• Advantages of having a workbench that can go up or down
  • Box to stand on instead of making the bench go up or down
• Roll around toolbox with grinders mounted?
• Grinders being able to be moved out of the way  
• Individual stands for grinders I used those but like having a table to put stuff on 
• Thinking of building a workbench for table saw to go underneath
  • Saw Stop has a hydraulic base that I can easily move around the shop.
  • This would help keep things off the machined surfaces of the saw.

• Prefab kitchen cabinets can be used for bases then put work surface on them 

Grinder Items

• Right now I have 
  • 1 – 2X72
  • 1 – 9” Disk
• Planning on getting another 2X72 that can tilt horizontal
  • The horizontal feature would be to better utilize my surface grinder attachment
• Tooling arms for the grinder

Grinding Belts / Sandpaper

• Hanging belts
• Plywood boxes for belt / sandpaper storage
• Tackle boxes for strips of sandpaper
• Storage for 9” PSA disks

Dust Collection 

• Grinder – METAL
  • Still plan on using 5 gallon bucket filled with water right under grinder
