Show Notes
Differences Between
- Simple Carbon (0.1 – 0.3 %weight)
- Medium Carbon(0.3 – 0.7 %weight)
- High Carbon (0.7 % weight and above)
- Tool steel (A2 / D2 / O1)
- Stainless steels (440c, 154CM, S30V, S35VN)
- Over 10% chromium
Effects of different elements on steel
- Iron – What makes steel, steel
- Carbon – “Grand Daddy” element – Biggest player for hardenability
- Manganese – Improves hardenability – Helps with oxidation in manufacturing
- Silicon – Helps with oxidation in manufacturing
- Phosphorus – A element that is not desirable / found in grain boundaries – has max value
- Sulfur – Helps with Oxidation in Manufacturing
- Tungsten – Hardenability / Carbides
- Chromium -Corrosion Resistance
- Molybdenum – Hardenability / Corrosion Resistance
- Niobium – Grain Refiner
- Vanadium – Grain Refiner
What is grain structure in steel?
- How does the grain structure affect the steel?
- Martensite, Austinite
- Why are carbides / other steel structures important?
- Is it a problem with having multiple steel structures in a blade?
How are particle steels made?
- How does that affect grain structure?
