It is written in Hebrew and the writing of the book took place in Judea shortly after the destruction of Jerusalem (587 BC). The book was written in response to the Babylonian conquest of Jerusalem in 586 BC.
It consists of 5 chapters containing various poetic hymns describing the desolation of destroyed Jerusalem, seen as divine retribution for the sins of the Jews.
