The lyrics paint the age-old tale of a young, star-crossed couple's trying romance in the face of both their families' disapproval. However, unlike said William Shakespeare’s classic novel “Romeo and Juliet”, Swift didn’t want this particular “love story” to end in tragedy. So she instead made it a happy ending where the man, with the consent of her father, proceeds to humbly request her hand in marriage.
