To the world, being harmless implies weakness or a lack of resolve. However, Scripture paints a far more profound picture. From the high priestly holiness of Jesus in Hebrews 7:26—who was "holy, harmless, and undefiled"—to the strategic mandate in Matthew 10:16 to be "wise as serpents and harmless as doves," we see that harmlessness is not the absence of power, but power under the absolute restraint of the Holy Spirit. It is the signature of a soul that has been conquered by God.True harmlessness is not a personality trait; it is a supernatural fruit of the maturing process. It is the result of the Spirit’s tireless work in the heart, softening the jagged edges of our defense mechanisms until Philippians 2:15 becomes a reality: becoming blameless and harmless in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation.
