Created in 2005 and advertised as having 50 million daily visitors and 4% of total Internet traffic at the peak of its popularity, the file-hosting platform Megaupload provided access to millions of gigabytes of copyright-protected content – most of it pirated. Seven years after its establishment, Megupload was shut down amid allegations of rampant piracy on the platform.
