John Keel did not believe UFOs were simply metal spacecraft arriving from distant planets.

After years of investigating flying saucers, monsters, psychic encounters, Men in Black, strange phone calls, failed prophecies, and the events surrounding Mothman, he began to suspect that the phenomenon was much older, much stranger, and far less honest than most people imagined.

In the first part of this Idiot Mystic series, we begin exploring Keel’s extraordinary book The Eighth Tower. We look at his life, the experiences that changed his thinking, and his theory that human beings may only perceive a narrow slice of reality.

Keel called the larger hidden system the superspectrum. He believed UFOs, demons, fairies, religious visions, cryptids, and other impossible encounters could be different forms produced by the same intelligence, shaped around the fears, beliefs, and expectations of whoever witnessed them.

The entities seemed to communicate. They offered warnings, predictions, and grand explanations about where they came from.

The problem was that they kept lying.
