A group of teenagers somehow turned the Idiot Mystic Spotify comments into their own high school group chat, and for a while I had absolutely no idea what I was looking at.
It started with a few people saying hello. Then more names appeared. People were checking on each other, asking everyone to look at the “PL,” announcing what state they lived in, discussing volleyball, Walmart, relationships, secret accounts, and one extremely confusing cheating scandal.
At first, I thought they might be bots.
Then the conversations became far too specific, emotional, and painfully human.
This episode is mostly my live reaction to watching the whole thing unfold while trying to understand teenage internet language in real time. I attempt to decode terms like PL and IFB, become increasingly concerned about everyone sharing their locations, accidentally get pulled into relationship drama, and eventually accept that my podcast comment section is no longer mine.
Please excuse the rougher audio. This was recorded during a livestream while I was hunched over my desk in what can only be described as a Gollum-gremlin-goblin position.
Underneath all the confusion, there were some genuinely kind moments. Young people checking on friends, offering support while dealing with their own problems, and trying to be there for each other in the middle of all the gossip and chaos.
Spirituality does not always happen on a meditation cushion or inside a temple.
Sometimes it happens in a Spotify comment section while you are desperately trying to figure out what “check the PL” means.
Please do not attempt to identify, contact, or harass anyone mentioned in this episode. They are young people being young people, and I sincerely wish all of them well.
