Jeremy Scharlow medically retired from the Mahomet Police Department where he served as a patrol officer for over ten years after an on-duty shooting incident where he was wounded. Nine years of his time as a police officer were also spent as a METRO SWAT member. Jeremy completed his Master of Art’s in Legal Studies at the University of Illinois at Springfield.He went on to found Relearningtolive.com, authored a book titled, “My Brother’s Keeper: Relearning to Live with PTSD”, and advocates for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and Suicide Awareness in the law enforcement community. On our 3rd episode, we sit down with Areta Wasiunec, MA, LPC.Areta is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Illinois. She obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Psychology from Saint Xavier University in Chicago and went on to complete her Master's degree in Clinical Psychology at the Illinois School of Professional Psychology. Throughout her career, Areta has been fortunate enough to work in a wide variety of mental health settings. Most notable in her training, was her time working as a therapy extern on the inpatient unit of a behavioral health hospital on Chicago’s west side. During this experience, she learned to work with some of the city’s most challenging psychiatric patients. Currently, Areta works as a crisis intervention counselor for a local non-for-profit organization, as well as a mental health therapist in a private practice clinic. She has experience in adolescent, adult and family counseling and is equipped to handle a plethora of disorders, including anxiety, depression, grief counseling, conflict resolution, and behavioral management. Although many of her clients have extensive trauma histories, Areta has always found her client base to be the most rewarding aspect of her career. She views mental health as a multi-faceted and complex issue, and is passionate about bringing mental health awareness to the forefront of her community. Areta values the importance of taking ownership over one’s life, and the courage required to implement healthy habits both in and outside of work. On his final tour, he lost his left leg through the knee to a roadside bomb while on patrol. His buddies, Major Scott Hagerty of Stillwater Oklahoma and Specialist Derek Holland of Wind Gap Pennsylvania died from the blast. He medically retired from the Army as a Staff Sergeant with many rewards, including the Combat Infantryman Badge and the Purple HeartEarl now is pursuing his bachelors in Counseling & Human Services at the University of Scranton and works for two non profits, Operation Enduring Warrior and The Oscar Mike Foundation.
