Identifying Core Values for Self Awareness (Dr. Karin Anderson Abrell)
Dr. Karin Anderson Abrell shares her story of choosing to let her core values lead her life, even when others don’t understand. She was unwed until her 40’s because she would not settle for a marriage that did not align with her values. Because of this experience, much of her work has been about helping others thrive as a single person. Our decisions and feelings are based on values. We need to understand our core values before we can begin the work of changing our thoughts and our mindset because values are the foundation for our thoughts. We also need to understand what is most important to us before we enter into commitments such as marriage. In most situations, partners need to agree on religion, because it permeates so much of our lives. if one’s partner thinks your beliefs don’t make sense, it will be hard to connect with them or make decisions together. How do we determine what our core values are? One good indicator of a value is that one get into fights with people about it. Maybe it’s punctuality, finances, politics, religion, expectations, or your definition of success. Pay attention to what makes you angry, and then ask why. What is the reason behind your strong emotion? Is it respect? Safety?  Exploration of the values handed down to you by your family of origin is an important part of the process of individuation. If you want to know what your values are, you must find out if you really agree with what you were taught as a child. Your parents might not approve,, but if the rules you live by do not sit well in your soul, you will might not find the happiness you seek. You might even have a meltdown and end up questioning everything anyway, so you might as well do the work now, before you fall apart. Therapy is a great place to find out who you are and how to grow to live without compromising your values. Finding the right therapist can be a challenge, especially if you are not aware of what your values are. If your therapist does not believe that your values are important, it will be hard for you to make progress. Don’t despair - keep looking until you find someone who aligns with what is important to you. At the end of this episode, Dr. Karin and I discuss the power of positive mindset practices. We have both personally improved our lives so drastically by making simple changes like taking time for gratefulness and choosing to smile. We have committed to staying mentally healthy, and to do that, we need a positive outlook. You can find a lot of information on this topic in other episodes of Hope to Recharge. Dialectical Behavior Therapy (Dr. Chaya Lieba Kobernick)
Borderline Personality disorder is often stigmatized and rarely mentioned in public circles as a topic of discussion. There is much shame around it and those diagnosed with it often keep it clandestine and private so as not to be exposed for the darkness they carry within them. Dr. Kobernick is a licensed clinical psychologist and the Founder and Director of The CBT/DBT Center. DBT stands for Dialectical Behavior Therapy which is a "behavior therapy". She helps patients target behaviors in order to affect how they are feeling. The additional layer here is Dialectics - which is a type of philosophy that states that there are always multiple truths and more than one way of looking at something in our world. This is important because it helps us to see the grays rather than getting stuck in the black and white. Having big emotions is a wonderful thing. People with big emotions can be the best artists, musicians, lovers, parents and nurturers. But, those emotions need to be navigated with the right skills and tools. Learning mindfulness and how to listen to her emotions helped Dr. Kobernick in her own childhood with big emotions.  The two elements that Dr. Kobernick focuses on when she treats patients with DBT are acceptance and change. So, the way it works is at any given moment a patient needs to accept reality as it is and they are working towards change in their lives. They both - acceptance and change - need to exist. You cannot push for change if you are not in acceptance. Thank you for listening to Hope to Recharge! if we are important to you, help us out and Leave us a review on iTunes. Parenting a Child with BPD (Lisa Wells)
Lisa Wells is raising a son with Borderline Personality Disorder. As a little boy, her child was diagnosed with ADHD. He was throwing furniture, had to be taken out of school and went through all kinds of treatment. He endured a lot of ridicule, punishment, and rejection from school staff for not behaving in the way they expected. Lisa assumes this contributed to the trauma which led to him to develop BPD and an older teen.  Lisa shared with me her strategies for staying afloat while her son is drowning. One of the components needed to able to care for your loved one’s high-needs is to realize that you can't be available for them 24/7. You are human too, and if you don't take care of yourself, you won't have anything left to give. This can be terrifying because there are so many “what if’s” and lack of control when you don't do everything that they need. In the long run, if you both want to enjoy your life more and be able to be available without burning out, you cannot place all of the responsibility for their survival on yourself. You sometimes have to let go, and that's okay.  Another major strategy Lisa utilizes on a daily basis, is to recognize and measure her physical and emotional capacity to help somebody else. If her son is calls her on the phone, Lisa will pause and take notice if she has at least 50% of her capability to deal with whatever situation might be. If she's already feeling overwhelmed by other things in life -- lacking sleep, the dog barking, and she's involved in getting something done, she takes a “self-care break”, works on her mindset to bring herself back up to at least 50%, and then chooses to reach out and support her son. Lisa has come to realize that the best way to help her son is simply using the practice of radical acceptance. No judgement. If he's only wearing one shoe, she won’t say something negative or critical, but just rolls with it. If he really wants some cigarettes, she will actually go buy them for him. If she shows up in his space, and it is clear that he really just needs to be left alone, she leaves. Fighting against whatever is going on in his life that isn't immediately life-threatening only makes him feel criticized, which can be a big trigger. Lisa chooses to believe that he's doing the best he can, and doesn't push him to be anyone besides who he is in that moment.  She communicates her boundaries with her son. When he has a meltdown, she will calmly say that she will not tolerate being yelled at. When a conversation starts to go off track, she will clearly tell him that she's not leaving forever; she just really needs to go get dinner on the table or do some other task, and she will call him again in a couple hours when they both have had time to regroup. Because so much that happens in his life seems like an emergency, it can be hard for him to understand how his mom could choose to not help him in his seemingly desperate situation, but she is working to help him understand that she is a person too, and her needs are just as legitimate as his own. Lisa relates how funny he is and how good he is at the things he's passionate aboutand often invites him over to help her with a project and delights in seeing how he finds the quickest and most efficient way to solve the problem she has presented him with. He loves to help out others. If he has a few extra dollars, he’ll go give it to a homeless person because he knows what it is like to be on the street. He loves being encouraging and making jokes with his neighbors and those around him. BPD is not all darkness. Those suffering from it are full of light… just often not for themselves. Loving and Supporting a Loved One with BPD (Brina McNally)
When Brina and Paul began to date, he was magnetic and charming. They had a connection from the first moment together having a drink. People at work had complained about Paul, saying he was aggressive and difficult. Brina never witnessed that side of him until about 6 months into their relationship, after Paul had too much to drink at a party. Not long after, Paul was diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder, after having been together almost 4 years and they had just gotten engaged. Brina knows every side of him, so when he begins to act in unexpected or scary ways, she is able to see the hurting child within, who just wants to be loved. Often, his emotions and expressions don’t match. He might be feeling happy, but he displays anger, because he breaks things. If he’s feeling angry, he displays deep sadness, sobbing. With the help of therapists, Brina has learned how to help him communicate his emotions and needs and to accept and honor her needs as well.  She has learned to communicate clearly with him what her plans and boundaries are, so that he feels less abandoned when she needs to do something “without him”.  I asked Brina if she ever feels guilty for triggering a mental health episode in Paul’s life. She explained to me how she understands that she is not responsible for the emotional response Paul might have to a choice that she has made. However, if she knows that something is likely to trigger him, she feels that she does have a responsibility, to at least prepare to make that choice, in the safest way possible. If Paul ever feels that Brina has knowingly hurt him, or vice versa, together, they choose a time when they can both calmly have a conversation about what happened.   Brina shared with me how much Paul has given to her and changed her life for the better. He is fun, energetic, and brilliant. When Brina comes up with  a hair-brained idea, he takes it as an intellectual challenge and figures out how to make it happen. Paul is able to draw her out of her shell, in ways she never thought possible. Without him, she might never have felt comfortable being on a podcast like this! Despite all the challenges, Paul has given her confidence and permission to dream of her own success. Healing from BPD with Mindfulness (Hannah Galliers)
Hannah Galliers has navigated through her journey with Borderline Personality Disorder, known in the United Kingdom as Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder (EUPD). Although Hannah's official diagnosis with BPD was recent, she has been on a healing journey through meditation and mindfulness practices and other therapies for several years. As with many people with BPD, she grew up in a broken environment where she was not allowed to process emotion. In college, she faced recovery from sexual assault, and shortly after, one of her best friends passed away. The realization that the path she was walking might lead to her death, pushed her to seek support for her mental health. It has taken years for Hannah to finally receive the official diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder. Her upbeat demeanor and lack of skills to recognize and communicate her feelings kept the depth of her struggle from being recognized by both herself and the professionals she interacted with. Finally, when she got in to see a psychiatrist about a possible ADHD diagnosis, that doctor redirected her to BPD. Unfortunately, the best-known treatment for this disorder (DBT) is not readily available in England, so Hannah has not yet begun that course. The practices that have served her best in coping with BPD have been placing consistent structure in her day, reflecting on her long-term progress, and keeping her mindset open and positive. Hannah started this journey without a lot of support, but as she has chosen to be open about her struggles and work hard to feel better, she found the love of her life. She and her partner Michael, have a baby and a home and will soon be married. Michael has been very patient with her and been able to recognize when the illness is talking and not his beloved Hannah. Together, they navigated through pregnancy that was made more difficult not only by BPD but also COVID lockdown. Before Michael, she had typical experiences with romantic relationships: the ups and downs, emotional breakups, and instability… but today, there is hope. People like Michael do exist out there, who are willing to communicate, take everything with a grain of salt and a pound of patience, and to keep their loved one with BPD accountable to do what they need to feel better. Borderline Personality Disorder: The Road to Recovery (Debbie DeMarco Bennett)
Debbie DeMarco Bennett grew up in a difficult home situation and moved to foster care as a teen. She went through her own Hell, and chose to go back, to help those who live there. For Debbie, recovery started with a diagnosis. She was hospitalized with dehydration. Because her emotions were so strong, her nerves caused her to throw everything up. Her partner and her best friend came to the E.R. and told her, that if she didn’t figure out what was causing these emotional responses and get help, they would abandon her. She told the hospital staff what her mental state was. The psychiatrist recognized some of her symptoms, did a diagnostic checklist, and diagnosed her with BPD. Debbie was relieved that there was a name for what she was experiencing, that she wasn’t the only one, and that the doctor had given her this hope: there was a treatment created specifically for people with her disorder called Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and their hospital had groups where she could go through the skills training course. As she began recovery, Debbie started writing a blog and created a Twitter account where she processed and documented what she learned. Her hope, was that another human might read her account and relate to her story. Soon, she had thousands of followers and messages pouring in from readers, many of whom were asking how they could access a therapy group. She realized she could offer them the hope that she had found, and started DBT Path. Now, dozen staff members later, they are able to offer DBT groups and other supports to people who are currently struggling in the same way she had been just a few years ago. There is hope for those with Borderline Personality Disorder and their communities. People with BPD have often been through horrific amounts of trauma and just may be some of the strongest people alive. They are waiting to be given a chance to heal, improve their lives, and contribute all the good they have to offer to their communities. People with BPD are so often immediately dismissed as a “hopeless case” or rejected and feared because of their unexpected behaviors. The stigma around this diagnosis is stronger than of almost any other mental illness. However, with education and proof of recovery, that stigma is slowly lifting. As people are able to find the right support system and persevere towards healing, the illness is not as destructive. Breaking the Silence on Borderline Personality Disorder
In this short solo episode, Matana outlines the coming episodes dedicated to discussing Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) with those affected by it. From being diagnoses to determining the elusive diagnosis, this crippling disorder causes shame, panic and few known treatment options. The stigma is real, but those suffering need not be alone. Join us in upcoming episodes and hear firsthand how those affected are determined to persevere. After a close friend loses her eldest son, Matana flew in to be there with her in time of tragedy. While Passover was too short of a Holiday, it provided the needed time to reflect about the important things in life and how we can each make a difference to those hurting around us. The Teen Suicide Prevention Society (Jackie Simmons)
Within the next 24 hours, more than 3,000 teenagers in the United States will attempt to take their own lives. Seventeen of them will succeed. Jackie Simmons' daughter, Stephanie, shared that statistic when delivering a speech which would change lives and inspire teens to come together with Stephanie's sisters and to create, "The Teen Suicide Prevention Society." When Stephanie was 14, she attempted suicide for the first time. Over the next several years, her mother placed her in different types of treatment programs, but never spoke with her directly about what she was going through. When Stephanie stood up and gave that speech, Jackie realized her huge mistake. Her daughter suggested to the audience, the solution to teen suicidality was prevention, not intervention, and that kids should be talked to about mental health, suicide, and strategies to deal with any difficulties they encounter before they were having a problem with it. That is the basis of their society. Today, they train people to be emotionally and mentally resilient and provide tools to talk with loved ones about suicide, before it appears to be a problem. Those who join the Teen Suicide Prevention Society receive a script on talking with their teens about suicide, tools to learn about where they stand, and to learn skills in mental and emotional resilience, and support from trained and professional staff. Joining is free, and access to most of the programs they offer are also free of charge. They just can't figure out how to live. They just don't know how to live with the pain… It's not a fascination with death. It is literally, that's the only option they can see in that moment.” @JackieSimmons @MatanaJacobs #HopetoRecharge “What if there's no sign of struggle? … the first sign is often a [suicide] attempt.“ @JackieSimmons @MatanaJacobs #HopetoRecharge “The reality is according to Freud, suicidal thoughts are normal. They're part of the natural problem solving abilities of the brain. They're part of our worst case scenario mechanism. They are there for a reason they can spur problem-solving if we let it.” @JackieSimmons @MatanaJacobs #HopetoRecharge “Whatever age your kid is now, now is the right time to start… we can't afford to wait. We can't afford to wait for there to be signs, for us to think that there's a risk factor, for there to be some reason to have the talk.” The reason to have the talk about suicide is because they're still breathing. @JackieSimmons @MatanaJacobs #HopetoRecharge ————————————————————————— Topics Discussed: Teen suicidality Talking about suicide with loved ones Building emotional and mental resilience Preventing suicide proactively, not just reacting to an attempt or cry for help ————————————————————————— Suicide Hotlines: USA: 1-800-273-8255 USA Crisis (Text): 741-741 Canada: 1-833-456-4566 United Kingdom: 116-123 Australia: 13-11-14 International Suicide Hotlines: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_suicide_crisis_lines ————————————————————————— Connect with us! Being the Parent of a Child Battling Mental Illness (Avremi Gourarie)
I had the privilege of talking with Avremi Gourarie about the life of his daughter Yocheved, her struggle with an eating disorder, depression and her heartbreaking recent death. On December 22, 2020, 24 year old Yocheved took her own life. Yocheved was a kind and thoughtful person. Loved by all. She was a top student, always maintaining perfect grades in school and at the time of her passing, was in the process of applying to PHD nursing programs. Posthumously, the family learned that she was accepted at Columbia University in their DNP program on track to becoming a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner. Unfortunately, her battle with mental illness raged, and she succumbed to it, not having fulfilled her dreams. Avremi shared with me all that their family had done to support Yocheved throughout her struggle. She attended a Modern Orthodox High School, which was less restrictive than the Chabad school that she had previously attended. They assembled a therapy team, which included a stint at a residential facility specializing in eating disorders. Family and friends provided the needed financial support and other provisions so they could focus on helping her life improve. The day of Yocheved's death came as a surprise to Avremi, who thought she was being supervised and making progress. The Gouraries and their community are still grieving, processing, and continuing to learn more about mental health issues as they ask themselves the hard questions - What happened? Avremi and I touched on so many important topics in this episode that we could not cover in such a short time. Stay tuned for more episodes covering such subjects of being the parent of a child battling mental illness, siblings of kids with mental illness, and how to balance religion with necessary treatments.
