The books of 1 and 2 Samuel close with a final 'song' of David, revealing the dimensions of his understanding and relationship with God. God is his rock, and so David calls to him in the face of his enemies. God responds to David's call, arriving in fearsome power -- and yet he compassionately reaches out to save David. Ultimately, God relates to David on the basis of the righteousness gifted to him.
