On this episode of Greater Than Athlete, I talk with former Boston University Soccer Player, Rachel Kingston. We’ll talk about the mental toughness required to overcome injuries, the difficulty of coming to grips with the end of your athletic career, and how young female athletes can avoid injuries. We cover her first torn ACL and how that affected her early soccer career (02:46). Rachel shares the difficulty of recovering from a major surgery as a high schooler (04:32). Rachel recalls how playing through severe injuries her freshmen year of college made soccer incredibly frustrating (09:34). She then shares the things that helped her become stronger mentally, as well as recover from her injuries physically (12:44). We discuss the importance of athletes being able to have access to mental health resources (20:26). Rachel shares how difficult it can be to transition to life after retiring from sports and trying to find out your new identity (33:33). We talk about how young female athletes not being guided towards proper nutrition and a strength and conditioning program is a recipe for more and more injuries (39:31). Finally, we jump into a recurring segment of Love It or Lose It (42:22).Make sure you rate, review, and subscribe to Greater Than Athlete and follow on Twitter @greaterthanpod.
