And it was in that moment, that what they did, made me physically say "Ew"........

Don't lie, we have all experienced this moment, the moment when your 'romantic' interest has done something/said something in front of you that instantly triggered you and gave you the ick. Maybe they had an off-putting eating style, clapped when the plane landed, or wore Birkenstocks? either way “The ick” has become a much-discussed discourse on TikTok and Instagram lately, where users have found attraction to a current or potential partner is suddenly flipped to a feeling of disgust. In an article published by Dr. Raquel Peel, Lecturer (Psychology), University of Southern Queensland, getting the ick could possibly be a self-defensive mechanism or strategy to protect against relationship failure, fear of commitment, fear of intimacy, or rejection sensitivity. Relationship counselling practice explains attraction is a “flip flop” phenomenon, where the thing that attracts you to someone today can be the same thing that repulses you tomorrow. While the “flip” are the positives and the “flop” are the negatives, they often are side-by-side characteristics that cannot exist without the other. For example, if what you love about a person is their crazy sense of humour, you might need to accept their loud, weird laugh is part of the same package. But if you suddenly get “the ick”, don’t act too rashly. Ask yourself if this is part of a pattern of holding back in relationships (knowingly or unknowingly) and in turn undermining your chances in love.

This week ya faves Mel and Ya Gal Saz rattle off a few icks of their own and even confess to some icks they may have given themselves, like embarrassing facial hair in between laser appointments or dreaded snotty noses. This week Mel also reveals a time a hook-up went so far south she was left speechless, and Ya Gal Saz asks a moral dilemma question: Would you ever date a friend's ex?
