In 1958, a soft-spoken man from the Atomic Energy Commission offers a newly widowed Montana mine worker free rent on a street the government has quietly bought. The price is one tablet at bedtime and his marriage bed, set up exactly as it stood at home. His son, a plasterer, urges him to accept. Within months, something is growing out of the empty side of that bed, the side that was his mother's.
Hired to patch the street's walls each morning, the son finds the same thing in every house. Whatever rises over the empty halves of those beds grows straight through plaster, bedposts, and anything else in its path, while the drugged men beside it sleep on.
A strand of it already runs through his father's arm, and every night at ten past three it leads him down the street, a little farther each week. The old man will not give up the bed he shared with his wife, and the son who talked him into this must learn what the government is growing before his father becomes part of it.
