For three years, an American cave surveyor working for CERN has kept a secret beneath the Large Hadron Collider: a forgotten smugglers' cave, far below the collider's tunnel, that appears on no map but his own. On the final night before the winter shutdown, he is sitting there in the dark when the rock above him cracks and a pencil-wide hole lined with glass opens in the roof, with another in the floor beneath it.
By morning, five men are dead in the cavern overhead. Whatever the beam created now rises through the mountain every eighty-four minutes, takes a hand's width of anything within reach (rock, steel, or a man), and falls back into the earth, a little deeper each time. The crews dig to stay ahead of it while he keeps quiet about what his map shows.
Soon it will sink beyond anyone's reach for good, and the last place it can still be met is the cave he wanted for himself. Every hour he stays silent makes the truth harder to tell, and other men are paying for it.
