Sci-Fi Subgenres: Hard Sci-Fi, First Contact

An expedition fleet attempts to establish contact with an industrialized planetary civilization, but their transmission lasers inadvertently ignite the planetโ€™s highly reactive upper atmosphere. Believing they are under attack, the planet launches a massive volley of sub-light kinetic kill vehicles toward the fleet. The expedition's diplomat must convince the fleet admiral not to authorize a retaliatory glassing of the planet, trying to decipher a way to surrender to a species they cannot even talk to.
