Paul McCarthy and Leigh Ledare are two artists of different generations who are known for breaking social taboos in their work. McCarthy is a legendary figure whose action-based videos and installations and large-scale public sculptures have sometimes provoked controversy about their subject matter. Ledare’s photography focuses on intimate relationships between him and his close family members, and have likewise been scrutinized for their bold and controversial approach. The two artists talked to Whitney Museum Curator Chrissie Iles about their friendship, commonalities and working methods.
