How do you translate in French?

We spent the day baking.

I often see 2 translations:

On a passé la journée à faire des gâteaux.

On a passé la journée en faisant des gâteaux?

1. Ils ont marché en bavardant. >> -ING = -ANT
   • They walked while chatting.
2. Ils ont passé du temps à bavarder.>> -ING = INFINITIVE
   • They spent time chatting.
