This year marks the 30th commemoration of World Press Freedom Day, a day designated by the UN to celebrate and highlight the role of journalists in the protection and promotion of democracy and human rights. The theme for 2023; "Shaping a Future of Rights: Freedom of Expression as a Driver for all other Human Rights" is particularly crucial as it spotlights journalism as the bedrock of all human rights. To mark this year’s event, Benjamin Tetteh spoke with two award-winning investigative journalists, Hanayo Oya from Japan and John Allan Namu from Kenya, about their experiences, the threats they face, and prospects for press freedom.
