Ford Theater 1948-02-08 (19) Abe Lincoln in Illinois

"Ford Theater" was a dramatic anthology radio series that aired in the late 1940s. It's often referred to as "Ford Theatre" and was sponsored by the Ford Motor Company. Here's a breakdown of its history and notable aspects:Two Seasons (1947-1949): The radio show ran for two seasons.Season 1 (NBC): From October 5, 1947, to June 27, 1948, it was broadcast from New York City on NBC. This season featured actors like Ed Begley, Shirley Booth, Gary Merrill, Everett Sloane, and Vicki Vola. Ratings were reportedly poor.Season 2 (CBS): Due to the low ratings, Ford moved the show to Hollywood and CBS for its second season, which ran from October 8, 1948, to July 1, 1949. This move came with an increased budget and a focus on top Hollywood actors, which significantly boosted ratings.Shift in Strategy: Initially, the show aimed to distinguish itself from other radio adaptations by using New York-based actors rather than well-known Hollywood stars. However, the lack of success led to a change in strategy, embracing "A-list" Hollywood talent for the second season. Stars like Jack Benny, Marlene Dietrich, Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Lucille Ball, Edward G. Robinson, and Bette Davis appeared in this later iteration.Transition to Television: With the rise of television, Ford eventually decided to end its radio show and focus on "Ford Television Theatre," which had a much longer run and even featured Ronald Reagan and Nancy Davis in an episode.Content: The show presented a variety of dramatic adaptations, often of popular films or literary works. Some notable episodes included adaptations of "A Star Is Born," "Laura," "Double Indemnity," "Wuthering Heights," and "Anna Christie."Listen to our radio station Old Time Radio https://link.radioking.com/otradioListen to other Shows at My Classic Radio https://www.myclassicradio.net/Entertainment Radio | Broadcasting Classic Radio Shows | PatreonRemember that times have changed, and some shows might not reflect the standards of today’s politically correct society.
