With the revelation that Brock Turner's victim was Chanel Miller, a mixed-race Asian American woman, a new racial dimension to this crime needs to be examined. Guest Thuc (@biatchpack on Twitter), a Vietnamese American filmmaker, joins Diana and Jess to explore whether Miller's initial anonymity made her a more universally sympathetic victim, how the stereotypes of Asian women as disposable sex objects may have affected Turner's lenient sentencing, and why certain folks online have responded by pathologizing Asian culture.Support us on Patreon! www.patreon.com/planamagTWITTER:Thuc (@biatchpack)Diana (@discoveryduck)Jess (@cogitatotomato)REFERENCED RESOURCES:Thuc’s article: https://www.flaunt.com/content/me-love-you-long-timeChanel’s trial statement: https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/katiejmbaker/heres-the-powerful-letter-the-stanford-victim-read-to-her-raChanel’s book: https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/553663/know-my-name-by-chanel-miller/https://www.cnn.com/2019/09/04/us/brock-turner-rape-victim-chanel-miller-book-emily-doe/index.htmlEmma Sulkowicz:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emma_SulkowiczEFPA ep. 74 media-exploitation-of-violence-against-asian-women:https://soundcloud.com/plan-a-magazine/ep-74-media-exploitation-of-violence-against-asian-womenPlane bae: http://reappropriate.co/2018/07/prettyplanegirl-and-white-exploitation-of-women-of-color/Historically the sexualization of Asian women was used to push racist immigration policies against Asians: https://twitter.com/theABGenius/status/1169453856343724032Jeff Yang’s commentary: https://www.facebook.com/originalspin/posts/10216700741205643?comment_id=10216704142410671¬if_id=1567657674409538¬if_t=feedback_reaction_genericThread on victim blaming of sexual assault survivors: https://twitter.com/Splendidfire/status/1170045905564835840Connie Cheung resume:https://www.lipstickalley.com/threads/connie-cheung-once-applied-to-a-job-employer-responded-me-love-you-long-time.2526403/SUBMISSIONS & COMMENTS:[email protected]EFPA Opening Theme: "Fuck Out My Face" by Ayekay (open.spotify.com/artist/16zQKaDN5XgHAhfOJHTigJ)
