Learning Weekly Rav Tzaddok Sefer at Shirat David Efrat…In Short - Rav Tzadok connects the debate about when the world was created (Nisan vs. Tishrei) and the counting of the years of the Flood to a deeper idea: the generation of the Flood was potentially fit to receive the Torah (the soul of Moshe was already present then). The “bursting of the fountains of the deep” alludes to the opening of the channels of both upper and lower wisdom. In the future, Moshe will again receive the pure Torah in connection with that generation. The time of year (especially around Cheshvan / the Flood period) is therefore especially suited for spiritual correction and rising from “falling.”Rav Tzadok explains that the forty days of rain connected to the Flood (and the rains of Marcheshvan) allude to the forty days of receiving and renewing the Torah. The rains are meant to be “rains of blessing” — an influence of Torah. When the generation of the Flood corrupted this potential, the waters became destructive. The period from Shemini Atzeret through the forty days into Marcheshvan is especially suited for fixing and renewing one’s attachment to Torah in truth.
