The 70th annual Za-Ga-Zig Shrine Circus will happen out at the Jacobson Exhibition Center at the State Fairgrounds, and will include trapeze acts, freestyle motocross, animal acts and more.Where: Jacobson Exhibition Center, Iowa State FairgroundsWhen: Friday, January 24th through Sunday, January 26th — 6 show timesCost: $16 for adults, $8 for kids 12 and underLink to more informationThe Thing You Know AboutFather/Daughter Dance at the Science Center of IowaDes Moines Parks and Recreation is hosting their annual Father/Daughter Dance at the Science Center on Saturday, February 1st from 6:30-8:30pm. The event will include dancing, refreshments, photos and a chocolate fondue station. Tickets are $10 per person and will not be sold at the door, so you must buy them online in advance. For $45, you can learn how to make three hearty main dishes. Yes- you’ll also get to eat, and it’s BYOB, so check that out– it will get you out of the house.Where: The Wallace Centers of IowaWhen: Monday, January 27th from 5:30-7:30pmCost: $45 per personLink to more informationLooking AheadOne Run DMPS FundraiserThe second annual One Run fundraiser, supporting Des Moines Public Schools, is happening this April 25th with a 2-mile fun run. In case you don’t remember the details from last year, this unique fundraiser is completely free for those of us that participate. Each participant designates one school, and just by showing up that day to run, walk or even to cheer, corporate sponsors will cover the registration fee, and that money will go directly to the school of your choosing. For now, the action item is to put this date on your calendar. The registration deadline is April 13th, so I will warn you again when that date is upon us.Where: Greater Des Moines Botanical GardenWhen: Saturday, April 25thCost: Free to all participants! Participation funnels money directly to schools from corporate sponsorsLink to more informationGet ActiveSelf Defense: WWII Commando StyleHere’s an event that quickly caught my eye — this Friday, January 24th, for only $30, you can attend a historical combat and swordsmanship workshop called: Self Defense: WWII Commando Style. The workshop will be led by Maestro Paul McDonald visiting from Scotland and will be held from 6-9pm at the Eastview Community Center in Des Moines. For only $4, you can attend the workshop as a spectator, but no pictures or videos are allowed.Where: Eastview Community CenterWhen: January 24th Cost: $30 to attend, $4 to watchLink to more informationMusic SceneSunday Winter Concert Series – Botanical BluesNow that we’ve experienced the first major cold and snow of the year, it seems like a good time to talk about the weekly concert series at the Botanical Garden. Every Sunday, now through March, head to the Botanical Garden to get a dose of warm and humid air, and then stick around from 2-4pm to enjoy the Botanical Blues concert, which will feature a great blues act from around the Midwest. This event, called “I’ll Make Me a World in Iowa” is celebrating their 22nd year. On Friday, there will be an Education Day for middle and high school students, and that evening, the Embracing Excellence Gala will be held from 7-11pm. Tickets are $75 for the Gala, and will include dinner, dancing, a celebrity guest and awards. On Saturday, you can attend the Annual Celebration Day from 11am-7pm. This event is free, and will include art, history and cultural exhibits, soul food, a kid’s carnival, music, presentations, and more.
