A restoration completed in a single session – in areas with access to good dental care, this primarily means convenience for patients. Yet in the remote settlements in Amazonia (Brazil), modern dental technology can be virtually essential in order to perform as many dental treatments as possible in a short space of time. As was the case in the latest aid project of the Brazilian organization Doutores Sem Fronteiras (“Doctors Without Borders”) supported by Dentsply Sirona. Volunteer dentists provided treatment to the indigenous people of Brazil who often do not even have access to a toothbrush, let alone specialist dentists.

The Doutores Sem Fronteiras team traveled to a different community every day to provide dental treatment to the indigenous population. Initiator Dr. Caio Eduardo Machado, a dentist from São Paulo, led the interdisciplinary team of volunteers, including dentists, doctors, and dental students. The team visited a total of 30 different tribes and communities in the state of Rondônia. Devices from Endodontics, Restorative, Implants, and CAD/CAM were used in approx. 3700 treatments on more than 1000 patients in 35 days.

The helpers were faced with several challenges while performing dentistry in the jungle: suitable treatment rooms were required, the technology had to withstand heat and moisture, and treatment had to be completed quickly and safely in one day. A boat equipped with state-of-the-art devices and materials from Dentsply Sirona proved to be the perfect floating practice. Examinations and treatments could be performed according to the highest quality standards, just as in a normal practice.
