Nicole Young: No Hospital Job, 2 Nursing Businesses
Nurse Who Never Worked in a Hospital Built 2 Businesses
What if becoming a nurse didn't mean spending your career working inside a hospital?
Nicole Young built a nursing career focused on home care and became an entrepreneur with two businesses serving the healthcare community.
On this episode of Diversified Game, host Kellen Coleman sits down with Nicole, founder of MainLine Nursing Services Inc. and owner of Our Helping Hands LLC, to discuss nursing entrepreneurship, nonprofit leadership, caregiver education, and finding purpose through service.
Nicole began her healthcare journey as a Certified Nursing Assistant more than 30 years ago. Although she continued her education in nursing, she chose to pursue home healthcare rather than traditional hospital employment.
A defining moment occurred when she witnessed problems involving her mother's care in a nursing facility. Rather than simply complaining about the quality of care, Nicole felt compelled to help improve how future caregivers are trained.
That experience contributed to the creation of MainLine Nursing Services, a nonprofit focused on CNA test preparation and healthcare education.
But operating a nonprofit comes with financial challenges.
Nicole explains how she also operates Our Helping Hands LLC, a for-profit company providing CPR, BLS, AED, and first aid training. Revenue from that business helps support her nonprofit mission and creates opportunities for individuals interested in healthcare careers.
In This Episode:
• Building a nursing career outside the hospital system.
• Starting a nonprofit after a personal family experience.
• Using for-profit business revenue to support community education.
• The truth about nursing salaries, staffing shortages, and professional burnout.
• Why mentorship, networking, and strong relationships matter in entrepreneurship.
• The emotional challenges of responding to medical emergencies.
• Expanding access to CPR certification and CNA preparation.
• Encouraging more men to explore nursing careers.
• How Nicole balances entrepreneurship, family, volunteering, and personal wellness.
This conversation is especially valuable for nursing students, CNAs, healthcare entrepreneurs, nonprofit founders, and anyone considering an alternative career path in healthcare.
Nicole reminds us that building a business is not only about generating revenue. It can also be about creating opportunities for people who might otherwise be excluded.
